Buffalo Outdoor Center offers a beautiful riverside experience with friendly staff and a variety of outdoor activities. While praised for its location and hospitality, concerns have been raised regarding safety protocols and the responsiveness of staff in emergency situations, particularly concerning communication and rescue procedures.
An amazing experience. Booked over the phone for a raft and car shuttling. From the initial phone call to the in person experience, the staff was extremely nice, friendly, and helpful. The store was busy, but they worked efficiently to keep the line moving. I’d recommend making a reservation online or over the phone so it makes the check in process streamlined. Perfect experience for a bachelor trip like we did. Not sure how pricing compares to other companies but it was reasonable we thought. Store has everything you need if you forget anything. Location is great, very easy to get to and close to launch sites.
We did a 4 day trip on the Buffalo River. Great service with canoeing and shuttling. One caution - look over merchandise you purchase because if it’s clothing they won’t take it back. I purchased a sweatshirt for the chilly evening weather on the river. I noticed on the back were fuzz balls that happens when certain cotton products age. I stopped at the end of our trip to try and exchange it. I was told “you wore it we won’t take it back.” (I wore it once). That was the end of it. I was going to purchase one for my wife BUT …. No thank you
My friend and I came here to canoe down the river. The store is very cute and I had to snag a few souvenirs which they had a great variety of. I didn't rate it 3 stars for the store itself but for our experience canoeing the river. When we got to the river to grab our canoe the man was super nice and helpful he went over safety and when I asked if something happens to us when would they know to come help us because signal is spotty, he said not until TOMORROW MORNING. I asked when was the last time that happened and he said twice last week!! Okay I understand it's a risk for us to be out there however when he said we were the ONLY people going that day so there's no one the whole 4-6 hours gonna be on the look out?!?! Okay so back to the trip, we were doing great and at about 4 hours in we flipped due to being sucked into a tree with the rapid. Okay panic set in cause all we could think of was NO ONE IS COMING UNTIL TOMORROW! We worked together and eventually got it out after it decided to suction cup itself to the rocks on the bottom. So we felt tired and stressed. Then we kept looking for the sign of how far we were to the landing to get off, there's no sense of where u are the whole time. Finally we saw the pole painted red/yellow but there was not one person there to guide us in or tell us yes this is the spot. Nothing. If we missed it because the rapids which were right there too sucked us in we would of been screwed. We then had to drag our canoe out and didn't know where it goes because again NO ONE WAS THERE! So we dumped it as far as we could drag it. Mind you we told them we have never done this before and were worried. They parked our car for us which was great. So it was easy to just leave from there. The experience was good but the lack safety measures seems way too relaxed. I know it wasn't busy but what IF we got knocked out when we hit the tree? What IF we broke a leg or had a bad cut? No one would know until like 9am when they got on the river then however long until they find us. I think if they said we needed to be off the river by 6pm why not have an experienced kayaker who works there periodically go down and check every few hours and do a last sweep to ensure people are off and where they need to be just Incase they need help. I know the river is super long but clearly there are stops along the way so having someone do a sweep shouldn't be hard. Or maybe put up trail cameras and check along the route to SEE if someone needs help and if everyone is off by 6pm. Also having people at the receiving end would be helpful as well. Other than that it was a very beautiful place and such a peaceful adventure.
Staying at Buffalo Outdoor Center and spending time kayaking there was truly a wonderful experience. What made it even more special was the kindness of the staff—they were consistently warm, courteous, and genuinely helpful throughout our stay. Their hospitality made us feel so welcome and added so much to our trip. I wholeheartedly recommend BOC to anyone looking for both adventure and a place where people truly care.
Girls birthday trip for us. Rustic log cabin was clean & fairly roomy. Cabin had three levels with sleeping on each level. My bed was comfortable in lower level. No doors on sleeping quarters. Loved the wood burning fireplace and plenty, and I do mean plenty of cut wood to feed the fire. Very nice hot tub, lovely porch swing and covered deck saved us from the rain. I would recommend this place for sure. It would be best for young families or adult friends that are pretty fit but probably not for families with very young (babies) and not for people with disabilities as it's location is on a steep grade and no access for wheelchair and would be rough for people on walkers. Absolutely loved the location and the feeling of being "in the woods".
